OUR MISSION: CONNECTING RESEARCH TO COMMUNITY-CENTERED PRACTICE
Who We Are
The Institute of Development (IOD) partners with organizations to maximize their impact through rigorous research, practical evaluation, and strategic consulting.
We specialize in helping nonprofits, government agencies, foundations, and community organizations that are committed to making a difference but need data-driven insights and structured approaches to demonstrate and enhance their effectiveness.
We don't just consult. We partner. We listen. We transform.
Dr P's story
As a community psychologist and therapist with over 14 years of experience in mental health, social justice, and community development, Dr. Parker has always been committed to the principle of reducing harm and creating a better world. But she believes helping individuals change isn't enough — we also need to change our communities and institutions so they're more just, more transparent, and more effective at meeting people's needs.
She founded IOD to bridge this gap, helping organizations create evidence-based strategies for change that also honored human experience. At IOD, she brings together her background as a therapist and researcher, using a trauma-informed approach that uses data to drive real and meaningful change.
Dr. Parker is committed to using her strengths to help people find theirs, using her signature blend of idealism, honesty, and authenticity to transform people, organizations, and society. At IOD, we create pathways for communities to lead their own transformation. We share tools, redistribute resources, and build spaces where people use their collective wisdom to overcome barriers and create the futures they envision.
Framework/Values
At our core, we believe that meaningful change happens when the right people come together with shared purpose. We are guided by unwavering principles that shape every aspect of our work:
-
We cultivate supportive and safe environments, prioritizing the health of our team and communities. By promoting balance, boundaries, and personal development, we ensure sustainable impact.
-
We work to uncover and address disparities while advocating for legitimate power redistribution. Our commitment extends beyond acknowledgment to action—creating level playing fields, providing opportunities, and sharing knowledge so all can thrive.
-
Honesty and doing what's right guide our decisions. We are committed to being reliable and ethical in how we engage in relationships and our work, even when the path forward is challenging.
-
We acknowledge and prioritize diversity in both our projects and organizational culture. We work intentionally to create spaces where every voice is heard and respected.
-
Safety is foundational to our practice. We prioritize well-being, foster secure environments, and actively work to prevent risk for all individuals engaged in our work.
-
We prioritize the redistribution of power to those who have historically been left out of the conversation. Our participatory approach cultivates environments where diverse perspectives thrive—leading to tangible and transformative well-being and growth.
-
We design projects that intentionally support recovery and well-being. We advocate for access to resources that promote physical, emotional, and mental health, acknowledging that both individual and systemic needs must be addressed to support wholeness and resilience for all.
